MCT sets auditions for "Annie"

Special time set aside to audition for Sandy, the dog

Auditions for parts in a local production of one of America's most beloved musicals, Annie, will be held Saturday and Sunday, June 5 and 6 at at the Cameron ISD Performing Arts Center.

Saturday's auditions are open to anyone and will be at 2 p.m. Sunday's auditions will be held at 7 p.m. and are directed at the younger cast members (the script calls for a company of seven to 10 children ages 6 to 13, including the part of Annie) and for Sandy, Annie's dog.

Yes, the theater is auditioning for a dog.

"Sandy is really only on stage for a few minutes near the beginning of the show, but is very important to help set the stage" said Michael Fox, the show's director. "The dog will need to be able to cross the stage to the actor playing Annie, and otherwise, be well behaved back stage."

Fox said auditioneers should be ready to sing a song, attempt a few simple dance steps and read from the script. Hopefuls to play Sandy should be able to demonstrate their good behavior. "The show has some delightful parts for kids and adults," he said. "We're very excited about it."

"Working on our summer musical is one of the best ways to spend time with your family over the summer," said Bill Whitmire, president of the MCT board. "Just ask anyone who worked with us on The Sound of Music last summer. We have a lot of fun!"

In addition to the kids (and the dog), the script calls for four men and three women, plus the Boylan Sisters (a singing group) including Daddy Warbucks and Miss Hannigan.

The show is based upon the popular Harold Gray comic strip Little Orphan Annie, with music by Charles Strouse, lyrics by Martin Charnin, and the book by Thomas Meehan. It ran for nearly six years on Broadway and won the Tony Award for Best Musical. The musical's songs "Tomorrow" and "It's the Hard-Knock Life" are its more popular pieces.

A more detailed character list and plot synopsis is posted on the theater's website: MilamCommunityTheater.com. At the same place, you can find out more about the theater, and how to get to the civic center and the performing arts center.

Milam Community Theater will bring the timeless tale of Little Orphan Annie to the CISD Performing Arts Center July 31, Aug. 1, 7 and 8.
